Windstorm-Rated Screen Room Retreat

We selected this project because it combined a unique setting, a clear purpose, and the opportunity to work closely with the homeowners throughout the project. Our clients, a Rosharon-based couple, found us through radio advertising. They asked us to create an outdoor room that felt open and usable while meeting strict windstorm requirements along the Texas coast.

The couple sought a space to enjoy natural light and spectacular outdoor views while being sheltered from Houston's hot summers and sudden rain. The rear porch offered potential, but in its open state, it wasn't practical for daily use. Enclosing it allowed the All Star Construction team to create a sunroom that felt at home with the rest of the property while adding a new dimension to how the family spends their time.

A Space Built for Daily Life

The goal was to create a place where the homeowners could sit comfortably, free from bugs, and enjoy views across a large property. At the same time, the space needed to support regular use of a pellet smoker without allowing smoke to collect inside. The solution took shape as a windstorm-approved screen room addition at the rear of the home, designed with a tall, open ceiling that kept the room feeling expansive rather than enclosed.

This new space extended how the home was used, offering a sheltered place to relax, cook, and gather while remaining connected to the outdoors.

Materials Chosen for Strength and Regular Use

Because the home was located within a coastal windstorm zone, the screen room required a higher level of reinforcement. We used heavy-duty beam and post framing to form a strong central ridge, allowing for the open ceiling while meeting Texas Department of Insurance requirements. Our team and the homeowners decided on corrugated steel for the ceiling and walls, paired with fiberglass screens that kept insects out without blocking views.

There were some additional details our team had to handle carefully. The doors needed to be modified to be dog-friendly. We went with exposed industrial-style conduit for wiring and outlets, keeping the layout straightforward and accessible. We added beam lighting to highlight the ceiling structure and create an inviting atmosphere in the evenings.

To manage smoke from the grill, we installed a high-powered, multi-speed exhaust fan on the ceiling. Because of the height of the space, the fan was controlled remotely through a phone app, making adjustments simple and unobtrusive.

Challenges, Solutions, Highlights

Come Rain, Wind, or Bugs

One of the key challenges involved sourcing corrugated metal panels that were strong enough to perform overhead without flexing or denting. Standard options were too thin, especially when fasteners were left exposed. We located a heavier-gauge metal with a profile that avoided a commercial appearance while allowing the hardware to remain visible without distortion.

This choice balanced appearance and performance, so the room would hold up to both weather and daily use.

Project Highlights: What Made This Screen Room Stand Out

The finished space changed how the home was used day to day. What had once been an exposed back area became a comfortable place to spend long stretches of time, whether sitting quietly, hosting friends, or cooking without worrying about bugs or weather. The open ceiling kept the room from feeling closed in, while the screened walls preserved wide views across the property.

Just as important, the room held up to its setting. Even in a windstorm zone, the space felt solid and dependable without sacrificing openness. The industrial look, warm lighting, and strong structure worked together to create a space that felt like a natural part of the home rather than added on.
